Celebrating Milestones in Addiction Recovery

There are two types of people in this world: people who enjoy attention and people who do not (otherwise known as ‘birthday people’ and ‘non-birthday people’). Jokes aside, whether you seek attention or run from it, it should not apply when celebrating your addiction recovery milestones…we all have birthdays, but we certainly don’t all accomplish sobriety!

On your addiction recovery journey, it is essential to acknowledge your personal achievements and celebrate milestones along the way. Whether you have been sober for a month, a year, or ten years, celebrating your recovery milestones can be crucial to staying on track and continuing on your addiction recovery journey.

You might be wondering why it is so important to celebrate these milestones. Why is your sober anniversary so important? Can’t you just skip it this year? At one point or another, you may lose sight of why it is so important to celebrate an anniversary. There are several reasons why it is imperative to set progress markers and continually keep track of your sober anniversary as well as other personal achievements you’ve been proud of throughout your recovery.

Don’t Lose Your Spark

Think about a couple that’s been married for a year. It’s the first anniversary, and spirits are high! Love is in the air, gifts are aplenty, letters are long, and memories are re-lived. Now, picture a couple going on year 12 - what’s so special about 12 years? I’m sure year 10 was exciting, but maybe you just skip the celebration this time around, then again for years 13 and 14… and on and on. You get the picture. This couple, who had started with sparks and fireworks, are now in a place where the anniversary gets pushed to the back burner, and it is just one less reminder of the love you’ve shared for one another. Now, picture yourself doing this with your sober anniversary. Without reminding yourself of your sobriety, it may get pushed to the back burner, and you may forget the importance. Celebrating milestones allows you to keep your spark and remind yourself of how far you’ve come. The celebrations should only get bigger, and you should only grow more and more proud of the longevity of what you’ve achieved.

Your Family and Friends Care

It is fair to say that you are a shy person and attention doesn’t exactly fill your cup, however, there are people in your life who care about you and your journey just as much as you do. Your family, friends, peers, sponsors, and neighbors care about you and want to see you thrive. Letting people in on your journey is a personal choice, but the occasional reassurance to your loved ones goes a long way for their minds to be kept at ease and for them to be reminded of how far you’ve come. You are loved, and you deserve to be celebrated or, at the very least, acknowledged.

You Deserve It

Give yourself credit where it is due. You’ve accomplished something and are continuing to accomplish something major. You owe it to yourself to recognize your achievements meaningfully and treat yourself in a way that serves you. Your sober anniversary is yours; you can do what you want with it. Make it your own, and know that you deserve to give and receive love.

Celebrations look different for everyone. Think about what serves you and makes you feel proud. If you don’t like the attention and want to keep the progress to yourself, that is perfectly fine. If you enjoy the attention of your friends and family and want to throw a huge dinner party, do it. If you are somewhere in between, your celebration can look like treating yourself for the day by doing things that you love, or posting on social media and alerting your network to hear meaningful words of affirmation from people who care. As long as you feel celebrated, that is all that matters.
